Impressions

Recording the island

An intuitive approach to learning about the landscape.

For the upcoming event, one of the workshops will bring the opportunity to observe and document the geological patterns or impressions of Hilbre Island’s rock formations. Through observational drawing, and impression-making techniques by using charcoals and pastels in addition to creative writing we will form a series of 'artworks of nature' or ‘impressions’ recording the islands geology and our relationship to it. These ‘impressions’ will generate a 'mapping' of the island's geological history. Afterwards, a group discussion about the geological foundations of Hilbre will enable a space to discuss the interaction of the visitors and the land.

For the creative writing part, no experience is required, the main purpose of this part of the workshop is to enhance the meaning of what will be created visually. Linking a few words or a sentence to the impression will bring the opportunity to reveal or uncover a hidden meaning, which can be as personal or as impersonal as someone wishes it to be.

The mapping part of the activity will involve the combination of all the visual impressions created by the attendees, guided by a pre-existing model of a map of Hilbre.
